One of the most popular running events in the country is not a city-based marathon but a national tour of running events, organised by a group of running enthusiasts and experts. We are talking about the Puma Urban Stampede, which has steadily grown in popularity in India since its inception.
The 2015 edition of the Puma Urban Stampede is about to get underway this Sunday in Pune. The national tour consists of seven running events, starting in Pune on June 7, 2015 and culminating in Mumbai on March 6, 2016.
The Puma Urban Stampede is organized by Bangalore-based Runners For Life, which also founded the Kaveri Trail Marathon and the Bangalore Ultra. Besides individual 5K and 10K runs, the Urban Stampede tour consists of team-based corporate relays with four members running 5km each, which is arguably the more popular category. Participation in the corporate relay has seen immense growth since the inaugural year. In 2008, saw 78 teams from 38 companies participate. The subsequent years saw an increase to 149 teams in 2009, 294 teams in 2010 till we got to an all-time high of 486 teams in 2013. Overall, Runners For Life, which called itself the largest running community in India, has organized over 30 events in the last 8 years.
In the 2014-2015 edition, the top 10 teams from all categories (men’s women’s and mixed) participated in the National Finals in Mumbai in March this year, and the winning teams received an all-expenses paid trip and registration to the 10k race at Istanbul Marathon.
Following the Pune leg of the event, the next run will take place in Bangalore on August 1, 2015. FirstRun Ambassador and endurance runner Girish Mallya will be running at the Pune leg of the Puma Urban Stampede. Join him to get invaluable tips on how to take on a marathon.
