Ethiopian runners dominated the open category in the full marathon at the Goa River Marathon this weekend, to take two of the three podium spots in the men’s race, while Indian runner Rajashri Tarihal did her country proud by winning the women’s marathon.
This year’s Goa River Marathon saw the first full marathon in the state, and Indian women runners had greater success than their male counterparts. In the men’s full marathon Amogne and Geleta Kebeta – both Ethiopian – took the first two spots, while Kenyan runner Peter Mwangi came in third. In the women’s race, Tarihal, who finished with a time of 3 hours 52 minutes and 50 seconds, was followed by Jigmet Dolma and Tsetan Dolker. Amogne finished the men’s race with a time of 2:29:08.
Another Ethiopian, Chekol Dires won the 21km half marathon with a time of 1:08:50, while the competitive 10K was won by Kenyan Samuel Maina, who finished the race in just 33 minutes, 50 seconds.
Goa’s Nitisha Gaonkar won the women’s 10K with a time of 0:50:51. “I do the 21km as well but this year I did the 10km. I never fail to run, I ensure I run either in the morning or evening,” the 25-year-old Vasco native was quoted as saying in the Times of India.
