Despite heavy rains in some parts, most of India generally enjoys a spate of good running weather in July. No wonder then that the month comes with a massive list of marathons across several cities around the county, including the ambitious Great India Run across 6 states in the country. Here’s our pick of some of the most exciting and upcoming races scheduled across India this month.
The Great India Run 2016
This mass running movement aims to create one of India’s most historic sporting events and change the perception of running in the country. Flagging off this July, the unique event will see 15 elite runners start from the iconic India Gate on July 17.
The Great India Run – Ghaziabad (July 17)
As India’s first-ever multi-city ultra marathon, The Great Indian Run will see elite runners from across Indian and the world run from Delhi to Mumbai – a distance of 1480 km. Apart from the marathon, the event also includes 5K fun runs across several cities to encourage local running populations. The Ghaziabad chapter will take off from Shipra Mall at 6 AM. Registrations for the event are not closed.
The Great India Run – Gurgaon (July 17)
The Gurgaon chapter will conclude the first three city 5K races of the GIR. The event will flag off from the live entertainment destination, Kingdon of Dreams at midday.
The Great India Run – Jaipur (July 22)
As elite marathoners make their way through six Indian states with an average speed of 80-90 km every day for the GIR, Jaipur opens its Sawai Man Singh Stadium for local runners for a fun 5K run on July 22. The race kicks off at 6 AM and registrations for the same are open till July 15.
The Great India Run – Ahmedabad (July 27)
Great India Run is not just an attempt to create running history, but also spreading the message of fitness through the simple act of running across several Indian cities en route from Delhi to Mumbai. The Gujarat chapter of the event is scheduled for July 27 at the Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad. The 5K race kicks off at 6 AM, with registrations begin open till July 20.
Run India Run – 10K Challenge (July 24)
The fifth edition of the 10K challenge organized by the Mumbai Suburban District Athletics Association is slated to flag off from Jio Garden at BKC, Mumbai. The event features a non-competitive 5K along with the competitive 10K run and hands out a timing certificate to all those who finish the latter. Prizes are given among the following age group: Age Groups: 18 to 29, 30+, 40+, 50+ categories.
The Run Of Raramuri Tribe TRORT – 008 (July 30)
Having completed 7 seasons, The Run Of Raramuri Tribe is back with TRORT-008. The race is directed by well-known runner and coach Dr Gladson Johnson. The objective is to raise funds for social causes. There are three categories in TRORT-008; a 10K run, a half marathon and the marathon with the registration fee being Rs 850 across all categories. All participants will get a race day T-Shirt, post race breakfast, a timing chip, a running bib and a Tribal Medal.
