The Andaman Marathon is the island’s premier marathon event which is organized by the Andaman Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The event is organized with the aim of promoting a healthy life style and creating awareness about the various health benefits of running. The organisers also aim to promote the island as clean and green destination for tourists across the world. This year the Andaman Marathon is currently scheduled to take place on January 31, 2016, according to India Running. However, the final dates, dates for registration and the registration fees have not yet been disclosed. The previous edition of the marathon was held on February 1, 2015.
The Andaman Marathon this year included a half marathon (21 km) and the 10K run. With a total prize money of Rs 7 lakh last year, the Andaman Marathon is a lucrative option for professional and serious runners. The first prize for the half marathon was Rs 1 lakh, while the runners-up received Rs 50,000 and Rs 30,000. In addition, top finishers from the islands also won special prizes. In the 10K event, there was special prize for senior category for males and females above the age of 50.
The last edition of the 10k run had 300 participants while the half marathon saw many more serious runners and professionals take part. With timing chips embedded in their bibs, every runner’s timing is recorded and added in a digital certificate. This technology debuted in the 2014 edition of the event.
