There are several organized races and fun running events across the country during March to make the most of the favorable weather conditions before summer hits us bad. Here’s a spotlight on some of the most exciting marathons scheduled for this month.
IDBI Kolkata Marathon – March 6
Recognized by the AFI, the IDBI Kolkata Marathon is the only race organized in the city which provides athletes a full 42K course to test their spirit. It is also the official qualifier for the Rio Olympics 2016. The race has five categories of competition; along with the traditional full and half marathon distances, there is also a 10 km open run, 10 km corporate run and 5 km fun run for children. The marathon course starts from Red Road in front of the Rangers club and goes through the various landmarks in the city, including historic Park Street, Maidan and the Victoria area. Tennis player and city boy Leander Paes is the brand ambassador for the 2016 edition of the race.
Pinkathon Hyderabad – March 6
One of the most popular running events in India, the Pinkathon comes to Hyderabad in its multi-city marathon tour. The SBI Pinkathon Hyderabad will be held on the 6th March at People’s Plaza. The assembly time for all participants is 5.30 am. The registrations are still open at this link.
The Pinkathon is a 10km International Run, a 5K and a 3K held in different cities around the country, and is only for women. The event aims to encourage women to live healthy and stay fit. The Pinkathon also aims to raise awareness about breast cancer, its causes and its prevention. The Pinkathon, sponsored by SBI, has three categories of races, the 10K run, the 5K run, and the 3K run. Registration fees for each is Rs 655, and you can sign up on the official website.
Big Chandigarh Marathon – March 13
In its fourth year now, the Big Chandigarh Marathon encourages its citizens to ‘Run for Smart City’ this March. Apart from a half marathon for professional and amateur runners, the event will also see an open 5K, where each kilometer is dedicated to different aspects of civic life, from cleanliness to climate change and gender equality. All events take off from Chandigarh’s historic Rock Garden.
The Coca Cola Gurgaon R&L Half Marathon – March 13
Organized by the running group, Running and Living, the Coca Cola Gurgaon Half Marathon is a popular event with chip-timed races across categories, which include 10K and half marathon races, as well as a non-timed 5K. The runs start and finish at Leisure Valley next to HUDA City Centre Station and the course goes through varied parts of the city – MG Road, the Aravalli, passes through high rises and past some villages. The route is flat and non-crowded for the most part with a healthy rise and a drop between 5 and 9 km.
Womanathon – March 13
A tri-city run organized simultaneously in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai, Womanathon is an initiative that encourages runners to conquer the miles for the women in their lives. This year’s race supports the cause for ending violence against women; it is also using its proceeds for the treatment of diseases in women and children. Categories include 3K, 5K and 10K runs open to everyone, with organized Zumba sessions being a part of the event.
TGS Moveit Marathon – March 20
The Moveit Marathon is the first such sporting event of its kind organized by The Golden Sparrow, a weekly newspaper in Pune. With categories including 3K, 5K, 10K and 21K runs, the event is aimed to promote and encourage fitness across all age groups. Organizers hope to create a fun, high-spirited atmosphere with zumba classes, yoga and musical events thrown in. Participants are also given an option to support one of several social causes through their runs.
Mt. Abu International Trail Marathon – March 20
The 5th edition of the Mount Abu International Trail Marathon offers running enthusiasts from across the world to experience the thrill of a mountain run amidst the wild. The event which started with 60 participants in 2011 today has more than 3000 participants across three categories. These include a Trail Half Marathon (Timed), a 10K Run (Timed) and a 3K Peace Run. Trail runners will find themselves running past major landmarks including the famous Nakki Lake, the Tiger Path, an 8-9 kilometer stretch of jungle area, Arna Village,and Addhar Devi Temple among others.
