Smartwatches and wearable fitness trackers are popping out by the dozen this year and US watch brand Nixon isn’t shying away from joining the party. The company has launched a water resistant and GPS toting Android Wear device The Mission, targeted at sports enthusiasts and those who love taking on any adventure sport.
The Mission is billed as the ultimate smartwatch for those who live the outdoor life. It offers water resistance to 100m, which is more than most smartwatches, and it has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 2100 chip to power it. The whole device is framed in polycarbonate and stainless steel, covered with tough Gorilla Glass.
This looks just like any rugged outdoor smartwatch, but packs from serious sports and fitness features. Its onboard sensors can tell you nifty things such as tide times and snowfall. Tracking company Trace has powered the activity tracking features of the accompanying puck which can be attached to surf of snowboards to track speed, distance and time spent.
The integrated GPS can be used for surfing, skiing and works with any of the thousands of Android Wear apps. You can also sync it with running, workout and cycling apps. It looks and sounds serious, but it wouldn’t be a smartwatch without customisation options. You can pick up clip-on coloured casings, or dedicated watch-faces that mimic an analogue watch. The Mission would only be available in October 2016 and come in at a steep $400.
