Mornings can be tough, but making excuses is not going to make them any better! Research has shown that people who exercise in the morning tend to workout harder and longer compared to those who schedule their workouts for the evenings. This translates into burning more calories which will keep you pumped up throughout the day. Morning workouts will also ensure that you have no excuse for slacking off later in the day, they wake you up good and proper, they set the pace for the rest of the day, and they also give you a feeling of having accomplished a task so early on in the morning.

And you can easily turn them into a habit! This does require a fair bit of effort, but as they say, forming a habit is a matter of doing it religiously for 7 days, and on the 8th day it will hardly feel like a task. Here are a few steps that will ensure you get your your best workouts in the mornings:

Prepare yourself

Even if you accomplish the task of waking up in the morning, not finding your sock or running sneakers can send you back to the sheets. Avoid this by keeping your things at hand the night before so you don’t waste your time and energy into searching for essentials.

Gear up

Get your tracks, shoes, water bottle, iPod and all other running gear in order the night before. This allows you to cut down on your excuses the next morning.

Grab a Bite

Working out on an empty stomach is just going to make you feel more tired. So refrigerate a morning snack which you can grab the next morning while getting ready. A simple peanut-butter sandwich or couple of slices of fruit are a perfect way to energize early in the morning. If you want to take it a notch further, keep your smoothie ingredients cut and ready to go so you can just blitz all of it in the morning for a yummy smoothie. If eating before a workout is not an option then you can always fill up on breakfast afterward.

Get enough sleep

Make sure you get at least 7 hours of sleep the night before, even if that means lights out at 10 pm. If you feel groggy because you didn’t catch enough snooze then you are going to feel tired throughout your workout.

If you have company, exercising in the morning won’t seem so arduous. A little pre-run chat, a little healthy competition, plus a buddy to help you monitor your progress is always a good idea and makes the minutes fly by. If you have plans of re-scheduling then you’ll think twice out of obligation, even if your mind and body tell you otherwise.

Keep it Interesting

Choose an exercise that keeps you on your toes. Zumba classes are perfect to pull you out of your bed and get pumped up. Pick a gym with a good workout playlist or if you are headed for a run then make a playlist of your most favorite tracks to keep you motivated.

Treat Yourself

By treating yourself to a scrumptious breakfast could be key to keep you going. The thought of a hot cup of coffee or blueberry pancakes waiting for you on the table will make you get through your workout a little faster.
