In this week’s edition of weekenders for runners, we focus on movies that revolve around running or have intense running scenes. This should be on your ‘must-watch’ list even if you’ve seen them multiple times. That’s how good they are! And they might even get you up and running this weekend.
Chariots of Fire
Possibly the most exciting film on running ever made. It tracks the lives of British Olympians Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams in the lead up to their race (and triumph) at the 1924 Olympics. Add to that an epic soundtrack by Vangelis and you have yourself the perfect movie on running.
“Run, Forrest, Run!!” Admit it, you’ve used this phrase at some point in your life. Tom Hanks’ adorable character is what great movies are made of. Agreed it isn’t a movie on running, but in the few scenes that Forrest Gump runs, he means business.
Stolen diamonds, Nazis and a fanatical runner set the plot for this intense movie which is many a runner’s favorite. It is also from the golden Dustin Hoffman years when he could do no wrong!
Run Lola Run
Edge of your seat excitement where the heroine of the film runs through the most part of the film to save her boyfriend? Yes please! If this movie doesn’t get your adrenaline running, we don’t know what will.
A documentary on Wesley Korir, who could leave the poverty stricken clutches of Kenya because of his ability to run long distances in record time. But after winning multiple American marathons, including taking running’s most cherished prize – the Boston Marathon, he risks it all and returns home to help his fellow Kenyans create better lives for themselves. An inspiring documentary, which gives the viewer a peek into Korir’s resilience and kindness.
