The body’s cells face formidable threats constantly, from lack of food to infections. Another constant threat comes from nasty chemicals called free radicals. These are capable of damaging cells and genetic material, and the body generates free radicals as the inevitable byproducts of turning food into energy, and also from the food that you eat.

Free radicals have a voracious appetite for electrons, stealing them from any nearby substances that will yield them. But, we aren’t defenseless against free radicals. The body makes multiple molecules that take care of the free radicals. We also extract free-radical fighters from food. These defenders are called antioxidants. They work by generously giving electrons to free radicals without turning into electron-scavenging substances themselves. Hence, the need to have an antioxidant rich diet.

Now that you have a lowdown on the basics of why we need antioxidants, let’s focus on how to make them more delicious to eat. One of the easiest ways is to focus on berries and add them in your diet, and what better way to do this than by pulverizing some berry goodness with one of our favourite health drinks – almond milk! Here’s a super easy recipe that will have you bouncing off the walls!

What do you need?
• 1 cup homemade or store bought almond milk
• 1 cup frozen banana
• ½ cup berries (any)
• Honey (optional)
• Pinch of cinnamon

How do you make it?
• Blend all ingredients together in a blender until smooth, adding honey to desired sweetness.
• Sprinkle with cinnamon and enjoy!
