India’s biggest marathon, the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon returns this month with characteristic fanfare and pomp. The 2016 edition of SCMM will be held on January 17, 2016, kicking off at the iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in south Mumbai and running through the heart of the city.
While registrations have closed, typically the Mumbai Marathon sees hordes of spectators, onlookers cheering on runners in the marathon, half marathon and Dream Run categories. The Mumbai Marathon is one of the few in the country that has a qualification criteria for the full marathon, determined by finishing times at specific eligibility events.
In addition to the competitive marathons and Dream Run, there’s a Senior Citizens’ Run, and a Champions with Disability run as well as a Corporate Relay Run. The SCMM is India’s biggest marathon with turnouts of well over 40,000 in the last few editions. As such it’s a marquee event in the Indian running calendar and many of our favourite Indian runners have competed in this marathon at one time or the other.
This year’s SCMM promises to reward its competitive runners greatly. The top 10 finishers get a cash prize in both International and Indian categories, while there are special prizes for amateur runners in different age categories.
Breaking the course record nets runners an extra bonus.
In addition to the cash prizes, winner medals will be presented to top 3 overall men & women elite finishers, top 3 Indian elite men & women finishers and top 3 finishers of each marathon age category.
In a first, the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon has launched a mobile app for followers, runners and everyone who wants to know more about India’s largest marathon festival. The official app allows anyone to create their own training programme before the marathon and track their progress, just like mobiefit Run. Additional information such as news about the race, weather data and FAQs are also within the app for easy access.
