FirstRun tied up with HEAL Institute in Mumbai for RunDoctor, our latest step towards becoming a complete running companion app for all levels of runners.
The idea behind the association was to give new and experienced runners the means to start and keep running, but also give these runners the right advice to avoid and recuperate from niggling injuries and knocks. All this means it gives runners more freedom and knowledge to stick to the habit.
One of the biggest pain points for runners – literally – are injuries that often put an end to their running stint. It’s all down to not having access to expert help that can help you manage and overcome the injury. When such help is at hand promptly, the lasting effects of the injury can be greatly reduced. That’s where RunDoctor steps in. In an interview with FirstRun, HEAL’s Hamza Ghouse tells us the story behind the institute in Mumbai, and how the association with FirstRun for RunDoctor came to be.
Give us an introduction to The Heal Institute and why it was established.
The Heal Institute is essentially a multidisciplinary Sports Medicine & High Performance Centre created to offer a holistic approach to health and wellness. As a company, we believe in a state-of-the-art approach to injury management, post-operative care, sports-specific rehabilitation and exercise science. We are here to address the need for non-surgical care in the market.
Could you tell us a little about Heal Institute’s major achievements so far?
Starting with a 2-bed clinic in January 2013, our first major achievement was signing a deal with i-League team Bengaluru FC & JSW Foundation in June 2013. In November that year we set up our flagship facility in Parel, Mumbai which is a 7-bed clinic with a 700 sq ft functional gym for strength and conditioning, and rehabilitation, and there’s a 30-seater auditorium as well for seminars, etc.
In February 2014, HEAL tied up with Puma as merchandise partners. In the second half of 2014 we tied up with two teams in Pro Kabaddi League (Jaipur Pink Panthers & Bengaluru Bulls) as well as 2 teams in the Indian Super League (Chennaiyin FC & Pune City FC). HEAL was also the official Sports Medicine partner for the International Premier Tennis League (IPTL).
In January this year, we were the recovery experts at the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon and will continue this tie up for all Procam marathons as well as Pinkathon runs in India. We also opened a second clinic last February, a 4-bed clinic with a functional gym. In March 2015, our Corporate Wellness Program kicked off with JSW Steel and we also have Goldman Sachs on board now.
What are some of the main objectives or missions of the institute?

Tell us about the association with FirstRun and how it came about.
FirstRun were pioneering the 0-to-5K target market where you will naturally find many beginners and green runners. This present HEAL with a chance to step in and make running easier and pain-free for them. It was also in alignment with HEAL’s vision to make India more active. The HEAL–FirstRun partnership hence made mutualistic sense.
What can runners expect after signing up for the RunDoctor service within FirstRun?
For the first time an online coaching app is bringing to its audience expert, validated medical advice about injury management, training & recovery. This is a boon for those looking to make serious strides into the world of running, as such facility is usually only available for well-established athletes.
